„Young scientists’ camp“

Dzūkija National Park and Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve administrations have organized a camp for young scientists in the end of June. Varėna district municipality has sponsored this project. 9 students from Varėna „Ąžuolas“ gymnasium, Varėna „Rytas“ progymnasium and Merkinė V. Krėvės gymnasium are participating in it. The purpose of „Young scientists’ camp“is to stimulate the interest in nature and our environment, to deepen practical knowledge in it and to learn about nature in nature.
„Young scientists’ camp“ consists of three parts. This time students learnt to recognize birds, voices of birds, higher plants. They have got information about Dzūkija national park. In addition, young scientists learnt to be in nature without disturbing it and without leaving traces of their activities. They have learnt to feel the nature, to see and hear things which they can‘t get learning from tutorials. Moreover, we expect that while doing discoveries themselves, students will better understand nature conservation points.
The students were encouraged to look for the answers in manuals, audio records. We have paid attention to wild eatable, medicinal and noxious plants. In the end of the camp, all together students made illustrated camp diary.
The third part of this camp will be organized in September – October for the same students to recognize Dzūkija region mushrooms.
We hope that this project will be continued and we would like to organize similar camps to deepen students‘knowledge in other ranges in the future.
