OUR LIVES IN DZUKIJA NATIONAL PARK

Diego Martinez (Spain)

What to say about Dzukija National Park? Just I think that it is a fantastic place. I am in the middle of the forest, surrounded by trees, lakes and amazing streams, listening bird sounds and frogs croaking. Sometimes people tell me if that is not too boring, and my answer is always the same:
“I’m coming from big and crowded cities, so sometimes I need peaceful and beautiful places like this”.
My job here consists of helping out the staff who works in the Park, I mean, in the office to provide some information to the tourists, or helping in the forest which is the best part for me: tourist paths, guide tourist, marks, nesting, research and monitoring of plants, etc.
In our free time we enjoy taking the bikes and going to the forest, swimming in lakes, canoeing, picking up some mushrooms and berries, getting fresh milk or cheese (in Anna’s case) wild honey...basically, enjoy nature, breathe pure air and learn more about cultures and traditions.

Anna Zaparožec (Ukraine)

I like Lithuania and the job I am working here. There is a big difference between Lithuania and my native country, but also you can find some similarities.
Macinkonys – it is a small village, which is surrounded by the forest. It is one hour going by train to Vilnius and two hours by hitchhiking. I know here almost everybody and I really enjoy when they all say “Laba diena” for me even when they don’t know me. That you will never feel in a big city.
Marcinkonys and the National Park of Dzukija are really popular tourist destinations. A plenty of people from other countries visit our centre every day and I always find it interesting to communicate with them. The most popular attraction – it is travelling by canoes. Also travelling by bikes and on foot. Besides, people also comes to stay several days near the lake. So I have no time to miss home here.
I have never thought that it is possible to live so near the nature. Sometimes I feel here like in zoopark. One time when I was riding a bicycle I met two little foxes playing to each other on the track. And when I often ride a bike after work I sometimes see deer in the forest. What is more, I have learnt to be not afraid of bats here J
