General Data

   The Dzūkija National Park was established on 23 April, 1991 according to the Supreme Council decree No. 1 - 244 of the Republic of Lithuania to protect, manage and utilise the richest, naturally and culturally, territories of Dainava land. The principal object is to protect particularly valuable natural and cultural complexes of Dainava land, to cherish cultural traditions of Dzūkija, to spread traditional farming methods and to form conditions for cognitive tourism.
   It is the largest protected territory in Lithuania of 58519 hectares. Forests cover 47282 hectares. The major part of the park lies in Varėna district (ca 95 %) while smaller parts cover Alytus district (ca 4 %) and Lazdijai district (ca 1 %). The park is situated in Lithuania's south - west from Vilnius 100 km. and 140 km south from Kaunas. The park is maintained by 48 workers. Its territory is divided into 10 forestry districts.
   Merkinė small town and 79 villages are inhabited by a population of 4,300. Over 50 % of park inhabitants are of retirement age and only 10 % are younger than 15. The largest settlements of the Dzūkija National Park are Merkinė (1590 inhabitants), Marcinkonys (866), Panara (263), Musteika (104) and Margionys (91).
The park belongs to the Federation of European National Parks and member of the EUROPARC Nordic-Baltic Section.

  Dzūkija National Park-Numbers and Facts

  • The largest protected territory in Lithuania with an area 58.519 ha;
  • The park extends in the territory of 4 municipalities;
  • Forests occupy ca. 47.282 ha, with pine forests prevailing- 90,7 %;
  • 3 nature reserves and 28 reservation-8 of landscape, 16 of nature and 4 of culture;
  • 79 villages and the town of Merkinė, with the total population of ca. 4.300 inhabitants;
  • The highest spot is Dalgiakalnis, 168,2 m above the sea level;
  • The lowest spot is the Nemunas bed at Krikštonys, 66 m above the sea level;
  • 30 rivers and rivulets – from smallest water veins to the Nemunas;
  • 48 lakes with the total area of 232 ha;
  • More than 650 species of higher plants, 771 species of mushrooms, 258 species of moss;
  • 54 mammal species, no less than 198 bird species, 7 reptile species, 9 amphibian species, 38 fish species, 760 butterfly species;
  • 250 species on the Red Date List of Lithuania – 87 plants, 39 mushrooms and moss; 44 invertebrates, 4 fish, 5 amphibian and reptiles, 57 birds and 15 mammals;
  • The park's forests – Natura' 2000 territory for bird protection and Natura' 2000 teritory for protection of habitats and species, 8 protected plant communities, habitats of 25 types of European significance;
  • 8 nature monuments and 27 objects of nature heritage – hollowed pine tress, relict of ancient apiculture, the slopes of the Ūla, Merkys and Nemunas, interesting ravines, springs, exposures, ridges, valleys and lakes;
  • 54 objects of cultural heritage of state significance and more than 80 – local significance;
  • Merkinė mound – 11th-17th c.;
  • Merkinė Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary – a monument of architecture of the 17th c.; contains 11 monuments of art;
  • Liškiava mound – 3rd c. B.C. – 9th c. A.D., ruins of a castle, whose construction began in the late 14th c. –early 15th c. and was never finished; 
  • Late Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity in Liškiava and the former Dominican monastery built in 1704-20, the belfry and the roadside shrine are monuments of architecture. The church contains 11 monuments of art, among them a painting from the 17th c. and murals from the 18th c. Seven Rococo altars of the Holy Trinity decorated with expressive sculptures are among the most valuable examples of Rococo in Lithuania;
  • The Church of Simon and Judas Thaddeus in Marcinkonys was built in ca. 1880. In the early 20th c. it was surrounded by a stone fence, into which 14 passions of Christ were inbuilt. The churchyard and the church contains 10 monuments of art;
  • Zervynos, Musteika, Dubininkas, Lynežeris, monuments of architecture;
  • 5 museums: those of ethnography, regional ethnography, freedom struggles and genocide; Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius museum and a branch of T.Ivanauskas Zoological Museum;
  • Guest house “Ėglis” with 25 beds, 4 conference halls, 7 homesteads of village tourism, 4 cognitive nature trails.
